BNP will face Tarique’s case legally: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said they would face the money laundering case against the party’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman legally and politically.
 “The money laundering case against Tarique Rahman is politically motivated. We will face it both legally and politically,” he said while talking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He said, the government wants to send Tarique Rahman in exile. That’s why the government has
taken the “tactics” of convicting him in cases pending against him. Mirza Fakhrul arrived at the Airport by a Bangladesh Biman’s flight at about 11am from London.
The BNP leader said, they have become frustrated at the High Court verdict that sentenced Tarique Rahman to seven years’ jail and fined him Tk 20 crore in a money laundering case.
“The government being revengeful filed appeal against the lower court verdict. Tarique Rahman did not get justice in the higher court,” he alleged.
Replying to a question, he accused that the government of ignoring the national unity to fight against militancy.
BNP Chairperson’s adviser Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Sabihuddin Ahmed, central leader Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Barrister Rumin Farhana also returned with the BNP Secretary General.
A BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul went to London on July 16 to attend a discussion meeting on Bangladesh in the House of lords.
Replying to a question, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said different issues including country’s political situation, absence of democracy, human rights situation, extra judicial killings and economic development were in the discussion.
A government delegation comprising Prime Minister’s adviser HT Imam, Dr Moshiur Rahman, Post and Telecommunications Minister Tarana Halim, Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and State Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda also took part in the seminar.
Meanwhile, the BNP yesterday staged demonstration in different parts of the country protesting judgment against Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case. The city BNP could not hold any demonstration anywhere in Dhaka. BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, who is also member of the city unit of BNP, said they could not hold their planned meeting in the at Institution of Engineers Bangladesh as police did not give them permission. “We hope that we will hold a protest meeting in the National Press Club on Sunday,” he said. In another development, BNP senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a press briefing at party central office accused the government of trying to foil party’s pre-announced protest programme in different districts.
He claimed that members of law enforcers harassed party leaders and activists on Friday night and created panic among them. BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Advocate Sanaullah Miah, Abdus Salam Azad, among others, were present at the press conference.
