UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Saturday said it wants President Abdul Hamid to form a neutral Election Commission (EC) based on all
parties’ opinions so that it can work independently ignoring the government’s any influence and pressure.
“People expect the Election Commission to be neutral and independent unlike a pet bird of the government’s golden cage. It’ll also be a constitutional body in true sense which can ensure people’s voting right defying the regime’s
red eye and evil desires,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said, “We hope the President will constitute a neutral Commission so that all political parties, including the country’s major political party BNP, can have confidence in it.” The BNP leader claimed that their chairperson’s 13-point proposal on the constitution of a stronger EC was made as per the desire of people.
Rizvi said, if the President forms the new EC with people loyal to Awami League as per the Prime Minister’s suggestion it will not be able to enjoy people’s confidence.
The tenure of the current Election Commission expired in February next. President Abdul Hamid is going to start discussions with political parties with his first meeting with BNP on Sunday over formation of the new EC.
About Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls, Rizvi said though huge enthusiasm has been created among the voters over the December 22 election, they are in fear as terrorists are intimidating them. “The plaintiff of the sensational seven murder case has been issued a death threat.”
He said, their party has long been demanding recovery of illegal arms asking people to deposit their legal ones as well. “But, no step has so far been taken by the administration in this regard. It has now become a big question whether the NCC polls will be free and fair.”
The BNP leader warned that people will give a befitting reply if the ruling party rigs votes and the Election Commission remains active in protecting the government’s interest.
