UNB, Dhaka :
Accusing the government of conspiring to annihilate the nationalist forces, BNP on Sunday vowed to free the country from the grasp of Awami League to restore democracy and people’s rights.
“Pakistanis had killed our intellectuals in 1971 with an evil design so that the emerging nation can’t be built with the thoughts and merits of the brilliant sons of the soil. The same way those believe in Bangladesh nationalism and the Liberation War ethos are now being killed and made disappeared under a new plot,” said BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Fakhrul, the party acting secretary general, came up with the remarks at a discussion arranged by BNP at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day.
The BNP spokesman claimed that it has been proved through different researches that the then Awami League leadership did not want Bangladesh to be liberated. “This is why this party tries to brand as evil forces those who speak the truth.” He also said a ‘notorious force’, Mujib Bahini, had been formed after the country’s independence to suppress and kill those were against Awami League and expressed different opinions.
He also said the number of AL leaders who joined the direct Liberation War can easily be counted orally.
Fakhrul said the current regime which usurped power through the January-5 election is now resorting to different evil designs and repressive acts to cling to offices by suppressing its opponents and people who believe in free thinking.
The BNP leader alleged that Awami League having failed all on fronts had formed one-party Baksal rule in 1975, but finally could not hang onto power. “Awami League scrapped the caretaker government system after assuming office in 2008 through a controversial election to reestablish the one-party rule under a different cover as it knew people wouldn’t reelect it.”
Terming January-5 polls the most scandalous ones in the world history, he said Awami League always cries for democracy even after grabbing power through such a electing as it is a shameless party. Fakhrul claimed that the ruling party often tries to divert people’s attention to a different direction from the main issue of a fresh election by confusing them with their different tactics.
Reiterating his party’s demand for a fresh inclusive election, the BNP leader said, “We’ve clearly said we want a free, fair and inclusive election by which people will be able to reflect their hopes and aspirations, and it’ll have to be held under a non-party administration. The January-5 election has once again proved that no fair polls can be held under Awami League.”
