BSS, Dhaka :
Information Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday said that the BNP always used the evil fundamentalist forces as tools in politics.
“Ziaur Rahman rehabilitated those who sided with Pakistan against Bangladesh and Khaleda Zia put them in state power. And those whose leaders chant the slogan ‘We are all Taliban, Bengal will be Afghan’ are in the BNP-led alliance. Thus, the BNP always used the fundamentalist evil forces in Bangladesh as a plaything in politics,” he said.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on ‘Bangabandhu Bangladesh’ organized by the Swadhinata Parishad at the National Press Club in the capital here.
From time to time, attempts were made to create chaos in the country on various issues by hurting people’s religious sentiments, the minister said, adding that it was seen even during the Pakistani period when the throne of power was shaken by the uprising of the people.
Rulers of Pakistan, including Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan, took the cover of religion, but they were not around religious activities and did not follow religious rules at all, he added.
“Even today, those who speak falsely about religion are actually using religion as a tool in their political interest,” he said, adding: “The people of the country are outraged and I urge them to move away from this path.”
Swadhinata Parishad General Secretary Md Shahadat Hossain moderated the discussion.
With Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad Adviser Harun-ur-Rashid in the chair, the programme was attended, among others, by Awami League leaders Advocate Balaram Poddar, MA Karim and Jubo League member Manik Lal Ghosh.
