The BNP is facing triangle pressure in its election campaign for the candidates for the ensuing polls scheduled for December 30.
Senior leaders of the party are saying that most of the Sheaf of Paddy candidates are subjected to police harassments, ruling party attack and cases in courts.
They regretted the Election Commission’s apathetic attitude to the BNP’s reasonable complaints.
The party leaders said, BNP candidates, party men and supporters are not in the election campaign for security reason.
“The BNP candidates across the country cannot go to the voters. They are obstructed by the police, ruling party’s musclemen and civil administration,” BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas told

He said, “Police guard my home 24 hours. They arrest my workers every day. Many of my party activists are in hideout to avoid
the police harassment. In such a condition, how can I campaign? I have drawn the attention of the Election Commission repeatedly. But they have ignored it. It is the common scenario in every constituency. Everywhere our candidates are facing attack during campaign. Somewhere the attacks are made by police and somewhere by the ruling party men.”
The party leaders said, when the election campaign is in full swing and open for the ruling party men, then the BNP candidates are moving on the court premises for bail and facing ruling party and police attack. They accused the EC of playing a partisan role in favour of the ruling party. “We have not got any remedy. The EC does not take any initiative in this regard,” BNP Vice-Chairman Major (rtd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said it in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office on Thursday. Hafiz alleged that the Awami League muscle men obstacled him to go to his Constituency, Bhola-3.
“Ruling party and police sued more than 400 of my leaders and workers in fabricated cases. I have passed busy time for their bail from courts. On Wednesday I wanted to go to my constituency. But the Awami league musclemen have blocked my way at Sadarghat launch terminal with arms. They attacked my workers and injured several. The injured workers were admitted in nearby hospitals.
The musclemen forced the launch workers to deport before to time. That is why I failed to go to my area and join a scheduled election rally. It is the scenario of level playing fields,” Major (rtd) Hafiz said.
BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Rizvi said, IGP has called all DIGs and SPs to Dhaka.
“They have prepared a list of 2.5 lakh BNP leaders and activists to arrest to clear the field for the boat candidates,” Rizvi alleged. The BNP leader said, the main reason of the attacks and arrests is to frighten the voters not to go to the polling centers so that the boat candidate gets favour. BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said, “It seemed that the police are the opponent to the BNP candidates in the polls.”
He said it after submitting complaints on behalf of his party to the EC. The BNP leaders referred to the attack on the party and alliances candidates across the country including the attack on Professor Abu Saiyeed in Bera Upazila in Pabna. Professor Abu Saiyeed is Jatiya Oikyafront’s candidate from Pabna-1.
Miscreants attacked his campaign and vandalized two of his cars.
They also said that Barrister Moudud Ahmed, the Standing Committee Member of the BNP also obstructed him from joining his election rally in Kabirhat of his constituency Noakhali-5.
“Police have arrested Sekandar Ali, who proposed my candidacy. Is it a level playing field. If the EC and government want such a polls environment, they should stop the election process,” said BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
He said, the government and EC make us helpless; they are creating disappointment among the countrymen.
