BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia along with her party leaders and workers placed wreaths at the grave of the party founder late President Ziaur Rahman in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Friday to mark the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.
Meanwhile, a group of dissident leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and their followers attacked the vehicle carrying BNP’s Student Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Assistant Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku in presence of Khaleda Zia when they were returning from the grave.
The two leaders came under attack at the Bijoy Sarani intersection near the grave. The aggrieved JCD men attacked the vehicle with brick chips when Annie and Tuku went near the motorcade of Khaleda Zia. The JCD activists smashed the glasses of the vehicle. Annie and Tuku, however, escaped unhurt due to intervention by others.
The dissident JCD men have been protesting the new committee of the JCD since its announcement on October 14. Calling the committee ‘incompetent and pocket committee’, they demanded its cancellation.
BNP observes the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on November 7 every year in memory of the civil-military uprising in 1975. Alongside with the BNP, some other parties and socio-cultural organisations on Friday also observed the
day by holding various programme. BNP and its associate bodies chalked out a 10-day programme in this connection. As part of the programme, BNP hoisted party flags at its central office and Chairperson’s Gulshan office at 6:00am and the party men placed wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman around11:00am. The party will hold a rally at city’s Suhrawardy Uddyan today (Saturday). Khaleda Zia will address the rally.
After placing the wreath at the grave of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia offered Fateha there and joined a munajat, seeking divine blessings for eternal peace of the departed soul of her husband. BNP senior leaders, including Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were present.
Meanwhile, talking to the reporters after paying homage, Mirza Fakhrul said that they will realise their demand of mid-term election under a non-party government system through a strong mass movement. “The ruling party leaders are repeatedly saying there will be no election before 2019. But people will realise their demand through a vigorous movement,” he said.
He alleged that the government was destroying all the democratic institutions. For this reason, there is no democratic atmosphere now in the country. The only way to overcome the situation is an inclusive election under the non-party government system, he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said, November 7 is a very significant and memorable day to the nation as the civilians and the soldiers freed Ziaur Rahman from captivity foiling all conspiracies against the country.
Reacting to the remarks of the AL leaders that Ziaur Rahman was a killer of freedom fighters, he said, “This is their false and fabricated propaganda. Ziaur Rahman had been in captivity from November 3 and freed on November 7. The country’s independence and sovereignty were protected on that day under his leadership.” He, however, accused Col Taher of creating violence in the Army in that time.
