BNP to write FBI for info about Shafik

Khaleda discusses other issues with sr leaders

Staff Reporter :The BNP will request the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the US for supplying them information about journalist Shafik Rehman, whom the government arrested on charge of plotting ‘to abduct and kill’ Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.The decision was taken at a meeting with party’s senior leaders held at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office in the city on Tuesday night. The party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia presided over the meeting. The BNP chief called the meeting to discuss the latest political development in the country in view of the arrest of Shafik Rehman. Some party standing committee members, vice-chairmen, chairperson’s advisers and joint secretaries general joined the meeting.The meeting sources said that the BNP leaders decided to dispatch the letter to the FBI within a day or two for the purpose.Senior leaders in the meeting were of the opinion that the government was influencing the courts in fixing dates of the cases filed against Khaleda Zia. It was observed in the meeting that the government might announce a mid-term election, after convicting some key leaders of the BNP, including Khaleda Zia to prevent the party from taking part in next general election.The issue of attacks on party leaders and activists in the ongoing Union Parishad election was also discussed in the party. Sources said, party’s decision on participation in the next phases of the UP election would be announced through press conference.BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Brigadier General (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan, senior leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, Shah Moazzem Hossain, Selima Rahman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Dr. Osman Faruk, Advocate Khondker Mahbub Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Barrister Shahjahan Omar and Md Shahjahan joined the meeting, among others.
