Senior BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy is confident his party will win in most municipalities provided the election is fair.
He has said the BNP was treating the Dec 30 municipal polls as part of its “exercise to restore democracy”.
“We all know what the result will be. But we hope to win 80 percent of the municipalities if people are allowed to vote,” he told reporters after paying tributes to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at his grave on Friday.
“The BNP candidates may not win if voters are prevented from casting their ballots,” he added.
As many as 235 municipalities are scheduled to go to polls in what will be Bangladesh’s first-ever local government election on party lines.
In reply to a question, BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan said the elections would be reduced to a farce if the Election Commission failed to function independently. “Let a neutral EC be formed to help people express their choice through fair balloting,” Khan added.
