BNP to take time to select single candidate for each seat

800 aspirants given letters: Final decision by Dec 9

BNP will take more time to finalise its target to select a single candidate for each constituency following the High Courts verdict on Tuesday barring polls aspirants who has been convicted for more then two years.
“There are a large number of cases pending against our party leaders and nomination aspirants. Besides, we are also worried about possible cancellation of our aspirants’ nomination papers on various grounds. We will finalise candidates till the last day of nomination withdrawal,” BNP Vice-Chairman Chowdhury Kamal Ibn Yusuf told The New Nation on Tuesday.
He said, the party has time till the allotment of polls symbol by December 9.
Other senior leaders of the party said preferring anonymity that they have not finalised candidates due to cases against leaders and also for the final consensus with their two alliances. They also are waiting for more leaders to join the party like Golam Maula Rony. The leaders said, names of the final candidates will be announced on December 9 the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers.
By that time, the BNP will select its final candidates and to give letters to the Election Commission to allot ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol.
The party on Monday started to handover nomination letters to their nominees.
The party on Tuesday resumed the distribution of its nomination letters among its selected candidates on the second day at the party Chairperson’s Gulshan office around 12:45pm.
The party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists after noon on the day that they had given letters to about 800 aspirants till the day.
Replying to a query Mirza Fakhrul said the BNP will give 60 seats to its alliance partners from Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance.
He said, the alliance partners are distributing their party nominations, while the discussions among alliance partners are still on going. “The matters will be finalised soon,” he said.
BNP handed over nomination letters popular singers Monir Khan (Jhenaidah-3), Rumana Islam Kanak Chapa (Sirajganj-1) and Baby Naznin (Nilphamari-4).
