UNB, Dhaka :
As it is preparing for holding its sixth national council on March 19 next, BNP has also set a target to overhaul its district committees by February.
Party leaders said, they want to have their most district committees reorganised before their national central committee is formed through the council.
However, some leaders said it will not be possible to form all district committees by one month. They said, only 10 out of the party’ s 75 organisational district committees have so far been formed and 10-30 more committees can be constituted before the council.
According to the BNP charter, presidents and general secretaries of all city, district, upazila, thana and municipality units will be the councillors of the party’s national council to elect their central leaders. Besides, two women will be made councillors from city and district units each.
As part of its fresh move, the party has announced to hold its Sylhet district unit’s
council on February 6, while Jhenidah on February 8 and Gaibandha on February 12. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has already been invited to be present at the programmes as the chief guest.
Leaders close to party chief Khaleda Zia said they have also a target to hold the councils of at least 35 other district units, including Rajshahi, Feni, Chittagong, Khulna, Bagerhat, Sherpur, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Kishoreganj, Jhalakati, Meherpur and Naogaon, by this month.
“Every party reorganises its grassroots-level committees before holding its national council. Formation of new committees at all tiers of a party is an ongoing process, and BNP is doing that,” said BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam.
Contacted, another party standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said though they have taken moves at different times to form their all the grassroots committees, they could not do it properly for various obstacles and evolving situations.
“Now our efforts are on to form the district committees. But, I think, it will not be possible to reorganise more than 20-30 committees before the council,” he added.
BNP organising secretary Fazlul Haq Milon said they have been directed to form the new committees of the all district committees within a short time braving all the barriers.
He hoped that they will be able to form all their district committees before their council if the government does not create any obstacle to their organisational activities.
On August 9 last year, BNP’s central office had sent a letter to the presidents and secretaries or conveners and member secretaries of the 75 organisational districts with directions and guidelines of the party chairperson to form their new committees through holing councils by September 30 of that year.
It had also warned that the central BNP would take decision on the district unit that will not be able to make its committee within the deadline. But, the party has so far could form only 10 district committees, including of Rangamati, Kurigram, Netrokona, Brahmanbaria and Nilphamari.
BNP joint secretary general M Shahjahan said they could not make any significant progress in forming grassroots committees due to the government obstruction, repression and last city polls and mayoral elections.
