As part of the strategy to bring the anti-government movement at final stage in the beginning of the New Year, the BNP-led 20-party alliance is planning to launch street movement on several issues which will be ultimately turned into ‘one-point movement’, said insiders.
From this view, the BNP-led alliance is likely to observe the ensuing January 5 as ‘Vote Rigging Day’, as the 10th Parliamentary election was held on the day in 2014 amid boycott of the alliance. The alliance boycotted the election demanding caretaker government system. They are still rigid on the stance and they now want a fresh election under a non-party administration.
Sources said that the alliance wants to begin the anti-government movement before beginning of the New Year through the issue of price hike of gas and power. Later, they will include the January-5 polls in the movement and will turn into ‘one-point movement’ to topple the government. The issues were discussed at the secretary-general level meeting of the alliance held recently.
In the meeting, the alliance leaders decided to call non-stop countrywide harta
if the government hikes the price of gas and power. It was reported that the government is going to hike the price soon.
M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan, secretary general of Bangladesh NAP, who attended the meeting, said that they would not come back from the street if they launch action programme on the issue of price hike of gas and power. He informed that they also discussed about programme on January 5. The programme on the occasion of the day will be finalised ahead of the day, he said.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, however, said that they are going to launch final movement which will ultimately ensure downfall of the present government. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will announce the street programme soon, he added.
Chairman of Islami Oikya Jote Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami said that Khaleda Zia has already discussed the strategy of the anti-government movement with them. In this stage, there is no alternative but to go for tougher movement. So, the 20-party is going to launch a decisive movement soon, he added.
It was reported that Khaleda Zia will give fresh directives for the anti-government movement during a convention in the capital on December 18. Former leaders of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) and All-Party Student Unity of 1990 will hold the day-long convention. The BNP Chief from the convention may announce the programme for January 5 programme.
A BNP leader said that although they did not unveil the programmes for January 5, the party has taken a plan to hold several programmes protesting anniversary of the ‘one-sided’ election. BNP Chief has been discussing with the people of different sectors, including teachers and journalists, to finalise the programmes.
Meanwhile, as part of the strategy to intensify the anti-government movement, the BNP is now being liberal about the rebel leaders and workers of the party who were expelled from the party in the past.
The party has a plan to withdraw expulsion orders of the rebels, particularly the rebels of district and upazila levels who were expelled during the upazila elections. However, the party is still now rigid on its stance about the rebels whose activities affected the party seriously.
Sources said that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia directed the party concerned to issue letters for the expelled leaders of the grassroots level. Expulsion orders of at least 15 upazila level leaders of the party have already been withdrawn. Some 50 leaders will also be restored in the party. The letters of withdrawal of their expulsion orders are now ready in the central office, the sources added.
