UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Sunday hinted that their party will prepare a compete list of martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War to honour them properly.
“There’s no denying that there’re controversies and differences of opinions about the number of martyrs. The number can be 29 lakh, or 30 lakh or 31 lakh…why should we remain unsure about their numbers? It’s necessary to prepare their complete list,” he said.
Speaking at a protest programme, he bemoaned that the nation does not know the names of those who had made the supreme sacrifice and laid down their lives for this country.
“Their (martyrs’) names will remain written in golden letters in Bangladesh’s history. Why their family members won’t get the status as martyrs’ family. There was a move to make a list of their names after the Liberation War, and it should have been done at that time. If we return to power, we should complete this unfinished task.”
Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal arranged the programme at Nayapaltan’s Bhasani auditorium, protesting the lodging of a sedition case for her remarks about the number of martyrs.
The issue of making the list of Liberation War martyrs came to the light after
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at a discussion on December 21 questions about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs saying, “There’re controversies over how many freedom fighters were martyred in the Liberation War. There’re also many books and documents on the controversies.”
Khaleda’s remarks triggered huge criticisms from the ruling party and pro-liberation forces, prompting the BNP leaders to come up with their logics to defend their chairperson.
Meanwhile, a Supreme Court lawyer, Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, has recently filed the sedition case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Rashed Talukdar urging it to issue an arrest warrant against BNP chairperson for her remarks about the number of martyrs during the 1971 Liberation War.
Taking cognizance of the charge Under Sections 123 (A), 124 (A) and 505 of Bangladesh Penal Code, the court asked Khaleda Zia to appear before it on March 23.
Nazrul alleged that the government filed the sedition case against Khaleda unfairly though there was nothing seditious in her comments. “This country belongs to people and those had been martyred for it.
Seeking the honour for martyrs can’t be an act of sedition.”
He said, the successive governments failed to ensure the due honour of the martyrs. “Khaleda Zia called for taking an initiative to show them respect. But, the government instead of doing that charged her with sedition.”
Mentioning that a dangerous situation is prevailing in the country, the BNP leader said a pro-people government must be installed through an acceptable election to overcome it.
