Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) thinks that it has gained huge popularity and sympathy from all corners of the country after imprisonment of the party’s Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
“You see, thousands of crores of taka is being looted from state owned banks, stock markets, financial institutions and mega projects after the Awami League taken over state power. But, none of the real culprits involved in looting such huge amount of money were tried yet. On the hand, the government jailed Khaleda Zia on a false graft case,” BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas told The New Nation yesterday.
He said, the people are incapable to understand the real facts that why the government intentionally kept Khaleda Zia in jail.
Mirza Abbas said the people of the country are seriously irritated with this government for its misrule. “BNP is always a pro-people and popular party. The jailing of our popular leader Khaleda Zia has the increased the party’s popularity. We realize it in every moment from every corner of the country.”
BNP’s other senior leaders also think that the government is now in an uneasy position over Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment.
They said, 2018 is called as election year as the 11th parliamentary polls may be held at the end of current year. In such a time, the former Prime Minister and chief of the country’s biggest political party Khaleda Zia is imprisoned in a ridiculous allegation. It is creating huge sympathy for Khaleda Zia and also for the BNP.
The party leaders are trying to make this public support and sympathy longer with a view to making the BNP stronger in every level.
Meanwhile, the party senior leaders have already started discussions with different professionals, civil society leaders and foreign diplomats in this regard.
After Khaleda Zia’s verdict and imprisonment the party has sat several times with civil society members and foreign diplomats to show the BNP’s stand on the issue and the government’s failures.
As a part of the party’s strategy to make the popularity long lasting, the party started its agitation programme as nonviolent in nature.
Political analysts said, after jailing of the party chief, BNP shows its utmost patience to gain popularity. The peaceful movement is also favouring the party gaining more popularity.
“BNP chief has been jailed for an allegation of misuse of around Tk 2 crore. But Khaleda Zia made it clear that the money was not embezzled, rather is still deposited with a bank in name of the trust’s account. She also said that the money has increased by three times. In these circumstances, the people’s sympathy is posed to the BNP,” Dr. Professor Md Sharif Uddin of Jahangirnagar University told The New Nation. He said that the peaceful programme of the party really would help them achieve more love and respect from the people.
