Charging the ruling party with indulging in widespread vote fraud, senior BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Monday said Awami League has snatched people’s victory in Sunday’s upazila elections.
“The ruling party has defeated the 19-party-backed candidates in the upazila polls by capturing polling stations with the help of the administration. Once we saw food for work and now we’re seeing victory by force…Awami League aided by police, Rab and local administrations has snatched people’s verdict by grabbing,” he said.
Nazrul, also a BNP standing committee member, made the remarks while addressing a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the auditorium of the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the great Independence Day.
He said Awami League men won the “voter-less and candidate-less” national election on January 5 while they took the upazila polls by force and resorting to widespread vote fraud.
The BNP leader criticised Awami League leaders for their remarks that the elections were held in a free and fair manner. “Five people were killed during the fourth phase of elections, but HT Imam said the polls were good.”
The upazila polls proved that no election under the present government can be fair. “We must wage a movement to oust the government.”
BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Nazim Uddin Alam and Shamsuzzaman Dudu, among others, spoke at the meeting held with Chhatra Dal vice president ABM Parvez in the chair.
