BNP on Monday voiced deep concern over Awami League-led 14-party spokesman Mohammad Nasim’s assertion that they do not believe in ‘too much of democracy’, BNP on Monday alleged that the government is plotting to annihilate democracy in the name of development and limited democracy.
“Spokesman of the 14-party Mohammad Nasim has said they now believe in limited democracy instead of excessive one to ensure development.
It’s a matter of deep concern. We don’t know in which direction they’ re trying to take the country with such an evil plan,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He further said, “We think the government is conspiring to snatch people’s all democratic and basic rights in the name of development and limited democracy. Democracy can’t exist by uprooting the opposition and other’s opinion. It’s a dangerous fascist and autocratic idea.”
Ripon was addressing a press briefing at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Earlier on Saturday, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim at a discussion said “We believe in democracy but we don’t believe in too much of democracy. We’ll build Bangladesh following the democratic path Way Lee Kuan of Singapore and Mahathir bin Mohamad of Malaysia walked through. This is how we’ll take Bangladesh forward,” he said.
Disapproving the minister’s assertion, Ripon alleged that the government is trying to mislead people by putting democracy and against
development. “Democracy cannot be an obstacle to development rather democratic country’s, including India, are now progressing fast for practicing it.”
He urged the government to explain whether it wants the already squeezed democratic and constitutional rights to reduce further through a legal framework in the name of limited democracy.
Mentioning that the perspective of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are not the same, Ripon said the people of Bangladesh liberated the country with the spirit of establishing democracy in the country.
“The people of Bangladesh are different from others as they are inherently democracy-loving ones. We must uphold the spirit of the Liberation War. All the solutions to our problems lie with the spirit of the Liberation War. We want to clearly state that people and we won’t accept anything contrary to the Liberation War spirit,” he said.
The BNP leader urged the government to shun its fascist thinking of limited democracy and follow the true democracy.
