BNP has sent a list of those killed and made disappeared allegedly by the law enforcers in the last one month to the international human rights bodies and foreign embassies and high commissions to draw their attention to the ‘growing incidents of extrajudicial killings’ in the country.
The party requested the global rights bodies and the foreign missions to carry out an on-the-spot investigation into the incidents.
In the wake of a scheduled visit of a high-profile European Union delegation to Bangladesh in the coming week to asses the country’s human rights situation, BNP has provided the rights bodies and foreign missions with such a list, said sources close to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Contacted, BNP chief’s personal assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas said, “A good number of leaders and activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance have been killed in so-called gunfights in the name of drives by the joint forces across the country since January 5 this year.” Besides, he said many 20-party leaders and activists were arrested in ‘false’ cases. “Despite the government’s strong media censorship, news items on such incidents were published in different national dailies.” Apart from killing the opposition men in crossfire, Shimul said, many 20-party leaders and activists were killed by throwing them under truck wheels and shooting in police custody. “Many leaders and activists were made crippled by shooting in their legs.” According to the list made by the party, at least 78 people were killed by law enforcers, including police, Rab and detectives, and ruling party men and in various incidents since January 5, 2015. Of them, the party claimed 43 were leaders and activists of the 20-party alliance and most of them were victims of ‘so-called crossfire’. The rest 35 are the victims of different violent incidents occurred in Rangpur, Kurigram, Jatrabarai of Dhaka city, Wazirpur of Barisal and Chouddagram of Comilla. It also claimed that over 18,000 leaders and activists of the opposition combine and general people were arrested during the same period all over the country while about seven lakh others were implicated in “false” cases. The names of those 20-party men said to be subjected to killing by law enforcers and ruling party men across the country were given below. Rakib Munshi (BBA student) and Raihan Ali (JCD) of Tebarai in Natore, Ainur Rahman Mukta (BNP) of Rajshahi city, Rajshahi University’s Shahbuddin (Shibir), Majiruddin (BNP) of Baneswar, Md Eslam (Jubo Dal) of Godagari, Nurul Islam Shahin (college teacher) of Binodpur in Rajshahi, Jamshed Ali (BNP) of Kansat, Asadullah Tuhin (Shibir) of Nawabganj, Matiur Rahman (JCD) of Shibganj in Chapainawabganj, Mizanur Rahman (Jubo Dal) and Mohsin Uddin (JCD) of Choumohani in Noakhali, Md Sohel (Jubo Dal) of Begumganj, Morshed Alam Parvez (JCD) of Sonaimuri in Noakhali and Sirajul Islam (BNP) of Shankarchandrapur in Chuadanga. Other victims are Pourasav councillor Imrul Kayes (Jamaat) in Narail, Nuruzzaman Jony (JCD) of Khilgoan, Emdad Ullah (Shibir) of Dhaka College, Ariful Islam Mukul (JCD) of International Islami University, Sakhawat Hossain Rahat and Mujahidul Islam Jahid (JCD) of Matuail, Al-Amin (Shibir) of Bhashantek, Jasim Uddin (Shibir) of Agargoan, and Solaiman (JCD) in Dhaka city, Sakibul Islam (Shibir) of Lohagarah, Jillur Rahman Bhandari (Jubo Dal) of Rangunia, Abul Kashem (worker) of sadar upazila and Harun-or-Rashid (JCD) of Charfasson in Bhola, Sultan Ali Biswas (worker) of Shailakupa in Jhenidah, Rafiqul Islam (general man) of Tala upazila in Satkhira, Asif Parvez Tukun (JCD) of Nandail in Mymensingh, Abdus Samad Mollah (BNP) of Chougachha, Md Yousuf (Jubo Dal) of Manirampur, Md Liton (Jubo Dal) of Durgapur, Raju (BNP) of sadar upazila in Jessore, Saidul Islam (Jamaat) of Ullapara in Sirajganj, Shahbuddin Patwary (Shibir) of Chouddagram, Kala Swapan (BNP) of sadar upazila in Comilla and Bachchu Miah (Jamaat) in Pirojpur.
In the list, the party narrated how their activists were killed apart from giving their addresses.
About abduction and enforced disappearances, the party said many of the 20-party men have long been remained disappeared.
They, however, did not mention the names of missing people in the list considering their security as their family members are trying to trace them out.
Besides, the party mentioned about the disappearances of its organising secretary Ilisa Ali and Dhaka City Corporation councillor Chowdhury Alam and many others before the January-5 election.
