Although the party candidates have won few UP chairman posts, the BNP finds political gains in the recently held countrywide union parishad polls.
The party leaders say they are not loser rather politically benefited, while the government has lost its image, inside sources said.
They said, the BNP high-ups are now busy to sum up the lowest tier local government polls. Some senior leaders publicly differed with the party’s stand to take part in the UP polls. But party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has accepted the other leaders’ views that wanted to take part in the UP polls.
Those leaders who are in support of participating polls said, they would get a chance to appear publicly in the campaigning programme. For years, the party’s local leaders and activists could not take part in any programme openly. This grassroots level poll is an important chance to make them to be open, the said.
In around 4,000 union parishads, the BNP nominated candidates have won 367 UP chairman posts. On the other hand, ruling Awami League won 2647 chairman posts.
BNP Standing Committee Member Brigadier General (rtd) ASM Hannan Shah
told The New Nation, “People of Bangladesh have seen the government, ruling party Awami League, police and the Election Commission’s role in the UP polls. It is clear to the people that why the BNP has not taken part on last national election held on January 5, 2014. It also is clear to them that no election will be free, fair and participatory under Awami League led government. It is the political benefit of BNP to take part in the recent UP polls.”
BNP Standing Committee Member and Dhaka City Unit Convener Mirza Abbas said, the ruling party has used the UP polls as the trial session for the next national election. They have taken part as their rehearsal that how to rig vote in the next parliamentary election.
The government thinks they have benefited from the UP polls. But we think it is not their gaining. The people get a serious message that any vote under this government must not be acceptable, free, fair and participatory.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal told The New Nation, “How many UP chairman post achieved, it does not matter. Everyone in Bangladesh has seen the real scenario of the UP polls. We knew that the government must snatch near to all UP chairman posts with the help of police and EC. But only for the sake of democracy we took part in the polls.”
Some leaders said, BNP high command thought that the UP polls have harmed the image of ruling party Awami League.
