Voicing concern over showing Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman arrested in a new case, BNP on Monday sought Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s ‘intervention’ in having him released from jail.
“The government is creating barriers one after another to Mahmudur Rahman’s release, though he has secured bail in all the cases filed against him from the apex court. We seek the Chief Justice’s intervention in ensuring his immediate release,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He came up with the demand at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office. Earlier on Sunday, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed against him under the ICT Act, clearing the way for his release. He was arrested from his office on April 11, 2013 in the case.
Rizvi alleged that the government shown him arrested in a violence case moments before he was supposed to be released from jail on the SC bail. He said, “We’ve seen the Chief Justice has been playing a good role of a guardian in favour of law and justice. He is the last resort for justice. We’ve now appealed to him as his intervention can ensure Mahmudur Rahman’s release.”
The BNP leader said blocking Mahmudur Rahman’s release is a government’s conspiracy. He alleged that the government fears the Amar Desh acting editor as he speaks the truth as an honest man.
Claiming that Mahmudur Rahman has been suffering from various critical diseases because of his long stay in jail, Rizvi said they fear his health condition will deteriorate sharply if he is not released from jail now.
