BNP says Hasina may have link with Zia killing

A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina blamed Ziaur Rahman for Sheikh Mujib’s murder, the BNP also pointed finger at the PM, saying that she might have connection with the murder of Ziaur Rahman, BNP’s founder and former President.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the allegation at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday. The BNP also vowed to launch fresh investigation in this regard if it is voted to power.
Earlier, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia blamed Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad for the murder of Ziaur Rahman and General Manzoor, and said they would try Ershad for the killings.
Sheikh Hasina on Monday said, had Ziaur Rahman been alive he would have been made an accused in Bangabandhu murder case.
Reacting to the comment, Mirza Fakhrul said that Sheikh Hasina brought the false allegation in a bid to divert people’s attention from her government’s ‘failure and misrule’. “The historical truth is that Awami League leaders were involved in Sheikh Mujib’s killing and they joined Moshtaque’s cabinet. Moshtaque was also a very close aide of Sheikh Mujib,” he said.
Pointing finger at the PM, Mirza Fakhrul said that there is a question in public mind whether there was any correlation between Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming on May 17 and the assassination of Zia on May 30 in 1981. Ziaur Rahman was assassinated just 13 days after her homecoming. This proves that the PM might have connection with the assassination, he added.
He said that they would launch a fresh and thorough investigation into the killing of Ziaur Rahman if BNP returns to power. They will launch a campaign to find links between Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming and killing of Ziaur Rahman, he said. When asked why did they not investigate the killing as they were in office twice, he said that there were some investigations but this time a more detailed investigation would take place.
Referring to the PM’s remarks that Moshtaque Ahmed had killed Sheikh Mujib and made Ziaur Rahman the army chief for his involvement in the murder, Mirza Fakhrul said, “AK Khandaker was the Air Force chief when Sheikh Mujib was killed. Sheikh Hasina made AK Khandaker minister later. So can we say she was involved in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s murder? This is an illogical debate.”
He regretted that president HM Ershad, the highest beneficiary of Zia killing, has been made a special envoy to the current Prime Minister.
