Staff Reporter :At least 35 people, including a policeman, were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at Pagla Bazar under Dakkhin Sunamganj sadar upazila in Sunamganj district on Wednesday afternoon.The frantic activists vandalized at least 15 vehicles on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway and torched some shops in the market area. Police rushed to the spot on information and brought the situation under control, lobbing 50 rounds of teargas shells and firing several rounds of rubber bullets.Police have arrested three BNP activists during the clash from the spot, police said. The incident took place between the supporters of the upazila unit BNP leader Ansar Uddin, deprived of party post in the newly announced ad-hoc committee, and the supporters of Faruk Ahmed, Convener of upazila unit BNP committee, sources said.Witnesses said, Ansar Uddin accompined by his activists brought out a procession at Pagla Bazar and blocked the Sunamganj-Sylhet highway by torching tyres and placing logs of trees. At that time, the supporters of the Faruk group reached the spot and a fierce clash began. Activists of both sides equipped with countrymade weapons swooped on each other leaving 34 people injured.Dakkhin Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) of M Al-Amin confirmed the incident and said that additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further trouble.He said that the atmosphere was under control of the law enforcing agencies.
