Staff Reporter :
The BNP has rejected the verdict in Zia Charitable Trust graft case awarding the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia seven years in jail saying it was dictated judgment.
The party called for countrywide demonstration on Tuesday in protest against the verdict.
“We reject the verdict because it was totally dictated judgment. It was given out of political vendetta to keep Khaleda Zia away from politics and the next National Polls,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said this at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office.
The BNP Secretary General made the announcement of the countrywide protest demonstration hours after the verdict delivered by a special judge’s court in Dhaka. According to the announcement, the party will hold demonstrations at all district headquarters and metropolitan cities across the country.
The BNP leader said the verdict has reflected the government leaders’ speeches.
“What the ruling Awami League leaders had said so long about the possible verdict of the case that was reflected in the judgment. It is totally a politically motivated verdict against our Chairperson,” Mirza Fakhrul said. He said, the process of the case ran unilaterally as our chairperson failed to go to the court due to her illness. The court has given verdict after running the case unilaterally without providing Khaleda Zia proper treatment.
BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokan, among others, were present at the press briefing.
