The BNP has rejected Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) decision to hold its November 7 rally at the Institution of Engineers’ Bangladesh (IEB) instead of Naya Paltan.
DMP gave the BNP permission to hold its rally on Tuesday at the last moment on 27 conditions. But the party said they would desire to hold the rally marking the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ at the Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13.
“We did not seek permission for the Institution of Engineers, We don’t want to hold indoor programme.” BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said in an immediate reaction on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier the party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, they would now seek permission for the rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13. He said it in a press briefing at Naya Paltan party office on Tuesday afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said, they shifted the date to hold its rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on Nov 13 in view of DMP’s silence.
Within few hours, DMP Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman said, the BNP could hold its rally on Tuesday afternoon on 27 conditions.
But the permission was just for the programme and not for the venue. The BNP will have to seek separate permission from the IEB for using it as venue, he said.
The DMP also said, the rally activities must be limited within the IEB and the party would have to wrap up the rally before 4pm.
The BNP angrily reacted to the DMP’s statement. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that they sought DMP’s permission to hold their November 7 rally at either the Suhrawardy Udyan or Naya Paltan in the city.
He said, “We shall organise our rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13.”
Besides, a number of police members cordoned the Nayapaltan BNP office on Tuesday to maintain discipline in the afternoon.
The party last month sought the police permission to arrange the rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7. But the permission was not given. The BNP then requested the authorities to let them hold the rally in front of the party’s Naya Paltan office on November 8.
