The BNP on Sunday alleged that the government was conspiring to isolate party’s popular leaders from elections.
“The government filed cases against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and other popular leaders with fabricated charges,” said, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He passed the remark when addressing a rally held in the National Press Club protesting a judgement against Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case. Dhaka City unit of the BNP organised the programme.
City BNP Convener Mirza Abbas chaired the
meeting. BNP standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Vice-Chairman Selima Rahman and Abdullah Al Noman, among others, spoke at the rally.
Mirza Alamgir accused the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of filing case with a political motive, as there is no truth in it. He accused the government also of filing “false cases” one after another against the BNP leaders.
“The Awami League has become politically bankrupt. Now, the government is trying to make Bangladesh a failed state,” he alleged.
The BNP leader expressed his hope that the whole world will be with the people of Bangladesh. “We want cooperation and friendship from foreign countries, but not attack on our sovereignty,” he said.
Dhaka city unit BNP alleged that they could not hold its scheduled demonstration in the city on Saturday, as police did not give them permission.
Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) will stage demonstration and bring out procession on July 26 and 27 protesting the court verdict.
The Hong Kong unit of the BNP have protested Tarique’s conviction. The unit President AFM Tarek and General Secretary Khairul Islam Nizami issued a statement in this regard.
