The BNP alliance plans to take to street again to forge new phase of movement for a fresh Parliament election immediately because of the government’s failure to curb militancy.
“The government has failed to wipe out militancy. They have made democracy inactive. There is no freedom of speech right now. They have created such an atmosphere that has encouraged extremism. We want to make the people united against militancy as well as the undemocratic practices,” said BNP standing committee member Brigadier General (rtd) ASM Hannan Shah to The New Nation.
In the meantime, the party’s standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy told The New Nation that BNP would take to street to make the common people united and aware against extremism.
“Our party will organise rallies across the county on militancy issue soon,” he said.
Sources said, B NP and the alliance will organise a national convention in the city soon in this regard. They are trying to bring eminent political leaders like Gono Forum President Dr. Kamal Hossain, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Quader Siddiquee and JSD President ASM Abdur Rab and other political and non-political eminent personalities of the country on one platform.
The party leaders said, the convention may be organised either at Bangabandhu International Convention Center, or Institute of Engineers auditorium or Diploma Engineers’ auditorium in the city.
The senior leaders of the party said, they will gear-up pressure on the government to forge a national unity to combat terrorism from the convention.
On Wednesday the BNP-led alliance have taken the decision after two meetings. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia presided over the separate meetings.
“The Gulshan attack on the 1st July and the Sholakia attack on the Eid day proved that the people of the country and the foreigners here were not safe. The Prime Minister on Wednesday warned of more attacks likely. Then how will the people live here? We want to end the situation. Now a free, fair and acceptable national polls is very necessary to form a people’s government to combat militancy,” said Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Iran, Chairman of Bangladesh Labour Party, an ally of the BNP led 20-party alliance.
BNP sources said, the party’s standing committee member and Dhaka city convener Mirza Abbas recently prepared a plan for BNP’s future movement. The plan has been submitted to the party Chairperson. Earlier, the city unit leaders, including the standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and chairperson’s advisor Abdul Awal Mintu, sat together recently to prepare the plan. According to the proposals, BNP might hold rallies in 15 city and towns across the country. The plan suggested that a grand rally would be held in the capital city in the last week of July.
Besides, the party leaders said, everything will depend on the situation. “If the situation seems suitable to organise such programme, then it must be observed,” said some senior leaders.
