UNB, Dhaka :
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said an biography of their chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in jail, is being written.
“An biography of her (Khaleda) is being written. We’ll find many things in it that we many people don’t know,” he said. Fakhrul disclosed it at a discussion-cum-photo show at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Nationalist Research Centre arranged the programme marking the 34th anniversary of Khaleda Zia’s taking of BNP’s leadership.
Khaleda stepped into politics two years after the assassination of her husband and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in 1983 and become the party’s senior vice chairperson.
She was elected party chairperson on May 10, 1984.
Khaleda also became the Prime Minister in 1991 and 2001 after her party’s victory in the national elections.
On February 8 last, Khaleda was sentenced to five years’ jail by a lower court, and then sent to Old Dhaka central jail.
Fakhrul said, the Prime Minister and her party has repeatedly been trying to undermine Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda and their family, though they have immense contributions to the country and politics.
He said the government’s move to defame Khaleda and her family will not be fruitful as people know their history. The BNP leader narrated their chairperson’s role in the 90s anti-autocracy movement and her contributions to the country’s development and women’s education and empowerment. He demanded the government immediately release her from jail.
