The BNP plans to organise a big showdown in the city on May 1 on the occasion of the ‘May Day’, said the party insiders.
The rally, in memory of workers, will be held at the Suhrawardy Udyan. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to address the rally, organised by Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal.
Some leaders of the party said, the party wants to mobilise a large number of its supporters and workers in the rally of the May Day. “It will be a grand rally and we are working to garner about 50 lakh people to make it memorable one,” said a BNP leader.
The BNP leaders said that it would be ‘the biggest rally of all times’. The decision was taken in a joint meeting held on Wednesday at the Naya Paltan office.
Mirza Abbas, convener of the Dhaka city unit of the party, said, “You can’t think of this as a rally for the workers’ wing. You must treat it like a rally for Khaleda Zia.”
“We will make sure presence of more leaders and party workers to supercede all our past rallies to show the government that BNP is a popular party and commands people’s confidence,” he said.
He further said that a lot of people want to hear what Khaleda Zia say at rallies. That is why the party is organizing May Day rally. We cannot bring out street processions. One party only can do that now… what kind of democracy is this?”
The BNP held its national council on March 19, after almost six years, with an eye on mobilising its leaders and activists after massive defeat in the staggered Union Parishad elections. The May Day rally will be Khaleda Zia’s first public address after she spoke at the council meeting held at Institution of Engineers.
The last rally she addressed was in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office on January 5 last year.
The latest rally she addressed was at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 20 in 2014, just days after the Awami League returned to power for its second straight term.
BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said that a letter was sent to the Public Works Department seeking permission to use the Suhrawardy Udyan as the venue for the rally. “The authorities said that there is no problem provided that police make no obstruction,” he said.
