The BNP has planned to take to the streets from the month of March to press home its demands for fresh national polls and release of its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.
“We will take to the street soon after February, the month of Language Martyrs, with calls for fresh national polls cancelling the results of the votersless December 30 election,”said BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal on Friday.
He said, that the party’s other important movement is release of party Chief Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.
Party sources said, the programme includes protest procession, black flag wearing and rally in first phase. After the first phase, the party will announce road blockade like tougher programme.
Sources said that 10 committees had been formed to visit divisions, districts and upazilas to know about situations threat after massive defeat in the 11th National Polls.
The party leaders sai, the grass root level leaders and workers have been upset at the imprisonment of Begum Khaleda Zia a year ago and the Awami League’s landslide victory in the national polls on December 30. They said, the party’s 10 committees
will try to ameliorate party men’s morale and to strengthen movements.
They are also disturbed by the ruling party, administrations and government’s behaviours.
Political analysts said if the party leaders failed to boost the party men’s morale and strength, the party would be more and more shabby day by day.
They said both the party chief and acting chairman are out of the party men’s sights.
Party Chief Begum Khaleda Zia has been in jail for one year, while the acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has been staying beyond the seas for years.
In this situation, the party’s grass-root leaders have been nearly undone. They feel lonely and helpless .
In these circumstances, they need a dynamic call.
The senior leaders of the party said that the party men in every stage have been in frustrations due to the waves of cases filed against them for the last several years after 2007.
The party leaders said, if the central leaders failed to boost the party men’s morale, it would be very harmful for the party as it is out of state power for decades.
Apart from that, the party high command thinks they would not be able to free Khaleda Zia through legal battle.
“It will be impossible to free Khaleda Zia through legal battle. It needs to make the party strong and to take to the street massively to free our party chairperson from jail,” said BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Moudud Ahmed while addressing the protest rally organised to condemn Khaleda Zia’s jail
on Friday in the Institutions of Engineers’ Bangladesh.
In these situations, the party high-command has started to assess its power to take to the streets.
When contacted, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told The New Nation on Friday, “We are discussing our internal conditions. We are discussing about our next course of actions. After finalising decision, we will declare our movement programme through media.”
He said the party is now searching its weak points to overcome those before staging movements.
