UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Thursday chalked out a 10-day programme, including a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital, to observe the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day,’ marking the civil-military ‘uprising on November 7, 1975’.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programmes at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Friday after a joint
meeting of the party and its associate bodies.
“We’ve decided to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan as our biggest programme to observe the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day. We’ ll seek permission from the authorities concerned to hold it either on November 7 or 8,” he said. The BNP leader hoped that the ruling party will extend its cooperation to them in this regard. “Awami League is holding its council there (Suhrawardy Udyan) using the state machinery. We hope we’ll at least be able to exercise our right to hold a rally.”
Fakhrul also announced a 10-day programme to observe the day with due respect. The programmes include hoisting party the flags atop its all offices on the morning of November 7, and placing wreaths and offering fateha at the mazar of late President and party founder Ziaur Rahman at 10 am on the day by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and workers and holding a discussion at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh. The schedule of the discussion will be announced later.
Besides, the party’s associate bodies will hold various programmes, including discussions, cultural programmes, publishing supplements in newspapers, pasting posters and distributing leaflets on the occasion.
Amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians on November 7, 1975 jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the path for Zia to come to power.
While BNP and its alliances celebrate November 7 as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations consider it as the day of ‘killing of freedom fighters’. Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rob) observes it as the day of civil-military revolution.
