Reza Mahmud :
The BNP plans to form two committees for Dhaka city unit soon, sources said.
The plan has been taken to make the city units more dynamic to organise strong democratic movements against the government. The BNP high command is looking for comparatively younger leaders for both the units.
Staying for a long time out of the state power, BNP has tried several times to topple the government through movements. Before the last national
polls held on January 5 in 2014, BNP tried to compel the government by agitation to accept their demand to restore the caretaker government system. But the then Dhaka city unit of BNP under the convener Sadek Hossain Khoka and member-secretary Abdus Salam failed to play effective role.
After then, the party high command tried to restructure the city unit headed by standing committee member Mirza Abbas as the new convener and Shechchhasebok Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel as the member-secretary on 18th July of 2014. But this committee also failed to organise strong agitation.
In the two phases of movements, the grassroots leaders and activists played very active role to make the movement successful. The grassroots leaders and activists stayed in the fields in spite of police, RAB and BGB’s strong action against them.
At this, the grassroots leaders seriously criticized the central and Dhaka unit leaders. They blamed the central and Dhaka unit leaders’ inactivity for the failure of the movements. After then the BNP high command thought that two separate committees would be the right formula to make the party’s Dhaka unit leaders and workers active. BNP standing committee member Brigadier General (rtd) ASM Hannan Shah told The New Nation,“The party central leaders were preferring two city units to gear up movement. We have already made our associates bodies like Juba Dal, Shechchhasebok Dal, Mahila Dal, Chhatra Dal of two units in Dhaka City.”
“The party wants to appoint fresh, younger and courageous leaders to restore party’s lost image,” he added. Sources said, the probable candidates for Dhaka North unit as president are Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and MA Quayyum. The probable candidates as Secretary are Tabith Awal, Ahsanullah Hasan and Anwaruzzaman Anwar.
On the other hand, the probable candidates for Dhaka South as president are Salah Uddin Ahmed, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel And Abdus Salam. The probable candidates as secretary are Nabiullah Nabi, Kazi Abul Bashar and Sazzad Zahir.
