BNP and its associate bodies observed the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on Saturday commemorating the civil-military “uprising” in 1975.
On November 7, 1975, amid political turmoil soldiers and civilians jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the path for Zia to come to power.
Other political parties and different socio-cultural organisations also observed the day from different historical perspectives.
BNP chalked out a 10-day programme to celebrate the day amid the
absence of its chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in London.
The party hoisted party flag at its central office and all other offices of the party and its associate bodies early in the morning.
BNP leaders and activists, led by party standing committee member Moudud Ahmed, placed wreaths at the grave of party founder and late President Ziaur Rahman.
BNP’s all the units and associate bodies also observed the day across the country with various programmes, including discussion, photo exhibition, free medical camps and blood donation.
While BNP and its alliances celebrated November 7 as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations observed it as the ‘day of killing freedom fighters’.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) observed it as the day of civil-military revolution.
Meanwhile, BNP’s discussion programme scheduled to be held on Sunday at the Institution of Engineers’, Bangladesh marking the day was deferred due to an unavoidable reason, said a party press release.
A fresh date for the programme will be informed very soon, it added
