BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Thursday paid tributes to the party founder and late President Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave marking the party’s 38th founding anniversary.
Khaleda Zia along with thousands of party leaders and activists went to the Zia’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Mazar at around 12:20pm and offered Fateha there.
Thereafter, party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the journalists that the main challenge for the party would be to restore democracy in the country.
“The autocratic government has destroyed democracy and has snatched away people’s fundamental rights. They have been continuously repressing BNP men across the country,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “BNP is the most popular political party and it relies on people’s support. Whenever BNP is in crisis, the party men regrouped under the leadership of Khaleda Zia. All the party men took oath yesterday that they would be able to restore democracy in the country.”
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamir Uddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-Chairmen Selima Rahman, Mohammad Shahjahan, Ahmed Azam Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, chairperson’s advisers Amanullah Aman and Zainul Abedin Farroque, and joint secretaries general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Khairul Kabir Khokon were, among others, present.
Leaders and activists of different units and associate bodies of the party also laid wreaths at the late president’s grave on the occasion.
The party observed the day with various programme. As part thereof a discussion was held at the Institution of Engineers, where Begum Khaleda Zia addressed as the chief guest.
To mark the day, the national flag and the party flag were hoisted in the party offices across the country.
