The BNP, which earlier demanded the resignation of Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Bangladesh Bank’s Governor Atiur Rahman, now also wants the Prime Minister to quit together taking responsibility for the sensational heist in the central bank.
The party made the fresh demand at a press briefing at its Nayapaltan central office in the city on Monday.
Addressing the briefing, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said that a prevailing culture of impunity has led to the heist of $101 million out of Bangladesh Bank.
He alleged that such incident took place as the government did not take any action against public money plundering from the country’s banking sector. “The central bank has now subjected to plundering as the government did not take any stern position against the looting of huge money from BASIC Bank, Hall Mark, Bismillah Group, state-owned banks and capital market,” he said.
He also alleged that the government tried to hush up Bangladesh Bank fund
heist incident. “Why did the heist come to light a month after it had taken place? It proves that efforts were made to hush up the incident,” Rizvi said.
The Bangladesh won’t get rid of such incidents through only the resignation of the Finance Minister and the Governor. The resignation of the Prime Minister alongside the duo can ensure the liberty of the country, its people and the democracy, said the BNP leader.
He criticised Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s ‘ignorance’ of the incident.
