Although the BNP had earlier thought of launching fresh movement after the Upazila polls, it is now contemplating not to go for street agitation. The party has no strength for street movement, said some analysts adding it may go for tougher movement after reshuffling the Dhaka city committee and some other front bodies.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia at a rally in Rajbari on March 1 said that they would launch fresh movement after the Upazila polls. She also reiterated
 plans of consolidating the party.
Khaleda Zia reprimanded some senior leaders and the leaders of the city committee for their failure in staging the party’s movement resisting the Januray-5 polls. She also lambasted leaders of Chhatra Dal for their poor role during the movement.
No major development is in sight about the reshuffling initiatives both at the central and grassroots levels or the Dhaka city unit committee, which is frustrating the party’s dedicated leaders and workers.
Some leaders of the party said that they were in the dark about the reshuffling of the front bodies.
The party joint general secretary and spokesperson Salahuddin Ahmed said that they have decided not to announce street agitation programme now taking into consideration of the sufferings of examinees of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations that started on April 3. Standing committee member Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman said they are now more attentive to reshuffling the party instead of street movement. The process of overhauling the party is going on under the supervision of the party chief, he said. He, however, said that the new Dhaka city committee would be announced soon.
Khaleda Zia may announce a 21-member convening committee of the Dhaka city unit led by her adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo as convener and Sechchhasebok Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Sohel as member secretary. The tenure of the committee will be three months during which all thana and ward committees will be restructured.
