BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Monday said their party will not change their current peaceful programmes despite ‘government provocations’.
Speaking at a discussion, he also said the government has got unnerved
as its ‘evil designs’ have backfired due to BNP’s peaceful movement after Khaleda’s jailing. “Before going to jail, our leader (Khaleda) clearly instructed us to carry out the movement in a peaceful and disciplined manner for her release, forcing the government to create a level-playing field and hold the next polls under a non-party neutral election-time administration,” the BNP leader said.
He further said, “We won’t step into the trap of provocation set by the government to foil our peaceful programmes. We won’t get agitated following their instigation. We’ll free our leader from jail and realise our demand for holding the next polls under neutral government through and peaceful and systemic movement.” Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP platform, arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s unconditional release from jail.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said the government has ‘unfairly’ sent their chairperson to jail as it wants to hold the next polls keeping her away from the race. “Common people’s sympathy and support towards her marked a significant rise as she was convicted unfairly. We used to call her ‘Desh Netri’, but people are now calling her ‘mother’ of the country. She has also now become an international leader as the UN, the US, the UK and other influential countries are voicing concern over her jailing,” he said.
Referring to Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader’s comment that BNP has no capacity to throw tougher programmes, Mosharraf said the ruling party is suffering from heartburn as BNP’s peaceful programmes over the last one week are drawing public attention and appreciation. “Our programmes also demonstrated that our party’s strength and unity strengthened further.”
