The BNP was not given permission to bring out black flag procession in the city today (Wednesday). As part of the countrywide programme, the BNP-led 19-party alliance is scheduled to bring out the procession in the city.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on January 15 announced the programme for today (January 29), the first day of the 10th parliament session, in protest against holding the January-5 ‘one-sided’ parliamentary polls and demanding a fresh mid-term polls soon.
The BNP claimed that they have already submitted application to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) seeking permission for holding the programme in the city. In the application letter, they mentioned the routes of the processions- Nayaplatan-Malibag-Mogbazar or Suhrawardy Udyan-Nayapaltan-Motijheel. The authorities did not give permission till the filing of the report at 9:00 pm on Tuesday.
BNP’s international affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, on behalf of the 19-party alliance, at a press conference at BNP’s central office in the city urged the leaders and workers of the alliance to bring out processions in the wards and thanas if the government does not give permission. He urged the government to help them to observe the programme from 2:00 pm.
The BNP held the January 20 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city under its own banner. Jamaat and three other Islamic parties were absent in that rally. The BNP now wants to observe the black flag procession under the banner of newly expanded 19-party alliance.
