Tax evasion case: BNP MP Harun gets 5-yr jail term

A Dhaka court has sentenced on Monday three people, including BNP MP M Harunur Rashid Harun of Chapainawabganj-3 Constituency, to five-year imprisonment in a tax-evasion case.
Dhaka Special Court-4 Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam passed the verdict yesterday.
The court fined him Tk 50 lakh, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.
The court also sentenced Managing Director of private TV channel NTV Enayetur Rahim Bappi and owner of a car showroom named Sky Auto Ishtiaq Sadek-to two years and three years jail terms respectively.
Rahim was also fined Tk 1 lakh, in default, he will have to serve two more months in jail, while Sadek was fined Tk 40 lakh, in default, he will have to serve extra six months in jail.
According to the prosecution, Harunur Rashid imported a duty-free vehicle at Tk 11.65 lakh in 2004. Later, he in collusion with Imtiaz sold out the vehicle to Enayetur Rahim at Tk 97 lakh.
Later, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Yunus Ali of Tejgaon Police Station filed a case against MP Harun and two others on March 17, 2007.
