BNP Standing Committee Member and former Information Minister Tariqul Islam died in a city hospital on Sunday afternoon.
He breathed his last around 5:05 pm at Apollo
Hospitals in Dhaka at the age of 73, BNP sources said.
Tariqul was admitted in the hospital on October 14 and kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Tariqul had been suffering from kidney, diabetic and old-age complications for long.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at the death of Tariqul Islam and extended sympathy to the bereaved family members. He also prayed for the departed soul seeking eternal peace.
Leaders of the BNP National Standing Committee and the newly formed political alliance Jatiya Oikya Front’s leader Dr Kamal Hossain also expressed their deep shock at the death.
Tariqul left behind his wife, two sons and a daughter and host of relatives and political followers.
The first Namaz-e-Janaza of Tariqul is likely to be held on the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and the second one will be held in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office tomorrow (Monday), BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s media wing Sayrul Kabir Khan said.
Later, the body will be taken to Jashore and he will be buried at his family graveyard after another Namaz-e-Janaza, Sayrul said.
Tariqul Islam was elected as Parliament Member four times from his constituency in Jashore and served as the Information Minister and the Environment and Forest Minister under the four-party alliance government.
During BNP regime in 1991, he was first Social Welfare Minister and made Post and Telecom Minister.
During his student life, Tariqul was an active leader of former East Pakistan Students Union (Menon Group) and dedicated worker of Maulana Bhashani.
After inception of BNP in 1978, he joined the party politics. He served as joint Secretary General, Vice-chairman and other significant posts of the party.
