Staff Reporter :BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed was arrested from a house at Baridhara in the city early hours on Saturday.A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the house and arrested the BNP leader at around 2:45 am. Later, the elite force showed him arrested under the section-54 of CrPC and handed over him to the Badda Police Station in the afternoon, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of Legal and Media Wing of the RAB. MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, said that Rizvi Ahmed had been shown arrested in a case filed for torching a bus in Badda area on January 26.Before sending to the Police Station, Rizvi Ahmed was taken to the headquarters of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police on the Mintoo Road at noon from RAB custody for interrogation.Tuhin Md Masud, commanding officer of RAB-1, said Rizvi was arrested from residential building No. 98 on Park Road in Baridhara for his alleged link with the recent violence and subversive activities. The house belongs to an activist of BNP from Chittagong, the RAB official said.Earlier, the BNP-led 20-party alliance on Friday called a 72-hour nationwide hartal from 6.00 AM today (Sunday) alongside with the countywide blockade programme. Rizvi Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the shutdown programme. He has also been releasing statements from a hideout for the past few weeks. Earlier on January 3, plainclothes police picked up Rizvi Ahmed from BNP’s Nayapaltan central office and admitted him to Apollo Hospital in the city. On January 7, the BNP leader left the hospital secretly and was in hiding since then.
