BNP leader Monno dies

Haruner Rashid Khan Monno, an industrialist and BNP chairperson’s advisory council member, died on Tuesday at a hospital founded by him in Manikganj. He was 86.
Monno, also a former minister without portfolio, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Monno Medical College and Hospital in Manikganj around 5:05pm, said BNP chairperson’s media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
He left behind wife, two daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
The schedule for his namaz-e-janazas and
burial will be finalised once his daughter Afroza Khan Rita, also a member of the BNP chief’s advisory council and the managing director of Monno Group of Industries, returns home from London, said Sayrul.
He said, Monno had been undergoing treatment at the capital’s Labaid Hospital under Dr ZM Zahid since July 22 for various diseases and old-age complications. He was taken to his Manikganj residence on Monday night and later admitted to the hospital.
Sayrul said, the BNP leader’s body has been kept at Labaid Hospital mortuary.
He will be buried at his family graveyard at Gilondo village of Harirampur, Manikganj.
Monno was elected MP from Manikganj-2 constituency in 1991 and 1996 and from Manikganj-2 and 3 seats in 2001 with BNP ticket. He was also made a minister without portfolio in 2001.
Beginning his business career with Monno Art Press, Monno appeared as a big industrialist through founding the Monno Group of Industries. He established Monno Ceramic, Monno Jutex Industries, Monno Fabrics, Monno Attire Limited, Monno Medical College and Hospital, Monno Nursing Institute, Monno International Scholl and College and some other institutions.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed their profound shock at his death.
They prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed their deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
