BNP senior leaders at the several programmes in the city strongly criticised the government for giving approval to file the sedition case against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. They demanded immediate withdrawal of the case.
BNP Standing Committee Member Lt General (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said, the government wants to destroy the Zia family. So, the case has been filed against Khaleda Zia.
Speaking at a discussion, he branded the police chief’s demand for a separate police division as an ‘exposure of an authoritarian mentality’. “They want a police division, a bank. How many things do they want?” he said.
Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal, a pro-BNP organisation, arranged the discussion at the National Press Club in the city marking the birth anniversary of the BNP’s founder late President Ziaur Rahman.
Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at a programme in the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday demanded a separate division in the Home Ministry for the force.
Mahbubur Rahman said that the police would be free from bureaucratic tangles if they get the division.
He said that the police chief’s demand showed an absence of a ‘democratic
mentality’ in the police force. “It is an authoritarian mentality. Police cannot be authoritarian. They are the servants of the people. Their only duty is to resist evil people and protect law-abiding people,” he said.
Expressing concern over the current law and order situation, the BNP leader said that people are in a state of panic. The main responsibility of the police is to maintain law and order. But what are we seeing now? He asked. He claimed that corruption had gripped the entire country.
Meanwhile, BNP Vice-Chairman Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom at a separate discussion in the Press Club alleged, the government is distorting the history of Liberation War.
Censuring for giving approval to file the sedition case against Khaleda Zia, he said that the Home Minister once would face trial for this. Jatiyatabadi Muktijuddya Dal arranged the discussion.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a human chain programme also criticised the government for filing the sedition case. Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal formed the human chain in front of the National Press Club demanding withdrawal of the case against Khaleda Zia.
