The High Court (HC) on Monday granted bail for six months to BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah in a case he was recently sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by a lower court.
Following the HC order, there is no legal bar for Rafiqul to get released from jail, his lawyer Raghib Rauf Chowdhury told the reporters.
He also said that Rafiqul was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday for treatment.
The HC also stayed the trial court order that fined Tk 50,000 to Barrister Rafiqul in the corruption case.
The Bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain passed the order after accepting his appeal petition challenging the lower court verdict.
In the appeal, Rafiqul also sought acquittal in the case.
A Dhaka court on November 20 convicted and sentenced Rafiqul, a BNP Standing Committee Member and former Housing and Public Works Minister, to three years’ imprisonment in a case filed against him for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The trial court also fined Rafiqul Tk 50,000, and ordered that he would have to serve three months more in jail if he did not pay the fine.
Rafiqul was arrested by police hours after the Dhaka court sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment.
