A case has been filed against 36 people, including BNP leader Mahtabuddin Chowdhury Minar, in connection with the brutal killing of Fulgazi Upazila Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Ekramul Haque in Feni.
Mahtab Uddin lost to Ekramul in the recent Upazila election.
The victim’s elder brother Rezaul Haque Jasim filed the case with the Feni Model Police Station on Tuesday midnight.
Mahbub Morshed, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Feni Model Police station, disclosed this on Wednesday.
 Soon after the case was filed, police started massive raids in different parts of the districts and detained 23 people for their alleged involvement with the killing, OC Mahbub Morshed added.
“The detainees are now being interrogated in police custody. I hope that the identity of the culprits who were took part in the killing mission will be known soon,” he added.
In filmy style, a group of unidentified miscreant shot and chopped Ekram and then burned alive in his car in front of the Bilashi Hotel in Feni Sadar at about 11:00am on Tuesday. The miscreants stopped his car, exploded petrol bombs and then opened fire on him before torching the car.
OC Mahbub Morshed further said that police recovered a private car and two motorbikes in an
 abandoned condition from Birinchi area in Feni. Police suspected that the miscreants carried out the killing mission using these vehicles.
Meanwhile, a tense situation was prevailing in the district town since the murder. The supporters of Ekramul took to the street yesterday to protest the brutal killing.
They also pulled out some steel plates of a bailey bridge during their protest snapping the road link between Fulgazi to Parashuram from 12 am to 7 pm on Wednesday. Ekramul’s supporters also damaged several vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway blocking roads in Fulgazi.
The Fulgazi unit Awami League (AL) called a daylong hartal in the Upazila for tomorrow as part of their protest programme.
The local AL leaders expressed dissatisfaction over the role of the law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order situation in the district town.
