The BNP on Wednesday said, they are getting ready for starting the tough street agitation to free its jailed Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and to compel the government to hold inclusive national polls.
“We are getting preparations to design street programmes to get Khaleda Zia released from jail and holding an acceptable election,” said BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Moudud Ahmed
while speaking at a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club.
Diploma Engineers Association (DEA), a pro-BNP engineers’ organisation, formed the human chain, demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail and proper treatment.
Moudud Ahmed said, “It is not possible to free our party chief from jail through legal process only. Street agitation is the second option side by side with legal process.”
“Our party is now taking preparations to announce fresh agitation programmes to restore voting rights and democracy, and independence of the judiciary. I urge all the democracy loving people to get united to make their movement a success through united actions.”
The former Minister of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs said, “Khaleda Zia should have been released within seven days of her jail sentence through a legal battle. But we could not do it even though seven months elapsed since then, as the government has taken the lower court under its control.”
The BNP leader expressed his view for a greater national unity with other opposition political parties to force the government to ensure the next polls under a neutral administration.
He said, “There is no alternative way to forge the national unity. The freedom of the country’s 16 crore people now depends on a successful movement through the national unity.”
Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Dr. Mostafizur Rahman Iran, BNP central leader Riazul Islam Rizu, Zia Nagorik Forum President Lion Mia Mohammad Anwar and DEA adviser Sirajul Islam were also present.
