BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday expressed optimism that the President would form a neutral search committee to form next Election Commission with non-partisan character. He also accused the current Chief Election Commissioner of doing everything to keep Awami League in power forever.
“The CEC claims that the EC does not want electronic voting machine, but digital voting systems. The main thing is that the CEC wants to see Awami League in power forever,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
He said, while addressing a Representative Conference of Zia Parishad in the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.
The BNP Secretary General refuted the outgoing CEC’s recent claim that the Commission was successful in its five-year tenure.
The EC in fact did everything to keep Awami League in power forever.
The BNP leader seems hopeful that the President Abdul Hamid will constitute a neutral search committee to reconstitute the next EC.
“The BNP has shown no negative behaviour regarding formation of the search committee,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
“The President will undoubtedly form a neutral search committee which will be able to form a competent Election Commission to fulfil people’s aspirations,” He said.
Praising the President, the BNP leader said, “President Abdul Hamid is one of them who had struggled and fought for the country’s democracy in past.”
The President praised the BNP’s proposals about the formation of non-partisan EC.
“We hope that the President will be able to form a non-partisan search committee,” he said.
