Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has appointed British lawyer Lord Alexander Charles Carlile for providing legal assistance to all cases against the party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at the BNP central office in the capital’s Nayapaltan on Tuesday morning.
“The BNP supporters in Britain have hired Lord Carlile. He will counsel Khaleda’s lawyers on the 36 cases against her and provide all necessary assistance. If need be, he will come to Bangladesh,” he said.
When asked if Khaleda’s lawyers have proved to be ineffectual, Fakhrul responded, “Lord Carlile has a lot more experience in criminal cases and can give the case international exposure.”
“Lord Carlile has been involved in law and politics for decades. He is also a member of the House of Lords in the UK parliament. So, no question will be raised about his qualification and experience,” the BNP leader said. Alexander Charles Carlile, Baron Carlile of Berriew, is a Queen’s Counsel and a Crossbench member of the House of Lords. In the past, he successfully defended Princess Diana’s butler, Paul Burrell, against charges that he had stolen millions from her estate.
A total of 36 cases were filed against Khaleda and she was convicted for five years in jail in Zia Orphanage Trust Graft Case on February 8.
