UNB, Dhaka :
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is calling upon their party to join the next general election as she has ‘realised’ that no polls will be possible this time keeping BNP out of race.
“She has urged us to join the next polls from there (Sweden). Your call for taking part in polls is a matter of great pleasure indeed! We’ve got delighted a bit as it seems you’ve understood there’ll be no election without BNP’s participation,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the comment while
speaking at an iftar party arranged by Rajshahi University Nationalist ex-Students’ Association at a city hotel.
Earlier on Thursday, the Prime Minister at a reception in Sweden said BNP should join the next polls and should not repeat the mistake as it did by boycotting the 2014 election.
Fakhrul protested Hasina’s comment that BNP made a mistake by boycotting January-5, 2014 polls. “We had wanted to join that election. But, you arranged it under you annulling the 13 the amendment through deception. All the political parties and people were with our movement against you. That’s why you didn’t get any party except a faction of Jatiya Party in the polls.”
He alleged that the government is still trying to hold a lopsided election to cement the one-party rule.
The BNP leader warned that the government will not be able to hold any more unilateral election. “The election must be held under an election-time supportive or neutral government. Fair and credible election is not possible under a partisan government.”
Mentioning that their party chief will present the frame work of an election-time supportive government, he said Awami League will accept it if good sense prevails upon it.
Fakhrul said the ruling party leaders and activists have got frightened that they cannot return to power if a fair election is held. “They came to know through their internal surveys that they won’t get more that 30-40 seats in fair polls.”
