Staff Reporter :The BNP-led 20-party alliance has welcomed the proposals of the United Nations and of all quarters for a meaningful dialogue to hold an inclusive Parliamentary election in a free, fair and impartial manner.  BNP Joint-Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the 20-party alliance, in a statement on Wednesday said, “We welcome the initiatives of the United Nations and all other quarters for meaningful talks.”UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently sent separate letters to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, seeking their joint efforts to resolve the ongoing political impasse. Confirming the UN Chief’s letter to the PM, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam on Wednesday said that the government wouldn’t sit for talks with the ‘killer’.Salahuddin Ahmed in the statement also threatened to enforce hartals again from the next week if the government did not fulfill its demands. “Our ongoing peaceful blockade will continue and we will be compelled to wage tougher programmes, including hartal, if our demands are not met by this time,” he said.He criticised the government for resorting to repression, crossfire and enforced disappearance. The administration will not be able to suppress the people’s movement for restoring their voting, basic and human rights, he warned. He claims that their movement is now at the final stage and people’s spontaneous resistance will hasten the government’s fall. The BNP leader said that the conscious and patriotic section of the country fears that insurgents and undemocratic forces may emerge if the government blocks democratic activities of the opposition. He called upon the government to pursue the path of saving the country and its people by shunning vengeance and politics.
