BNP on Tuesday greeted Archbishop Patrick D’Rozario, the highest ranking priest of the Roman Catholic Church in the country, for being promoted as the first-ever cardinal from Bangladesh.
In a message of felicitation, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said, “We’re happy and proud of as Patrick D’Rozario has been pronounced as a cardinal.” He said the Archbishop has brought extra ordinary honour and dignity for the country. The BNP leader hoped that Patrick D’Rozario will play an important role in ‘establishing’ democracy in the country alongside people’s spiritual development.
He wished him good health and long life.
Earlier on Sunday, Pope Francis promoted D’Rozario and 16 other Roman Catholic prelates from around the world to the rank of cardinal. The 73-year-old cardinal from Bangladesh was born on October 1, 1943 at Padrishibpur in Barisal in a Catholic family.
He professed member of Congregation of Holy Cross at the age of 18 and became ordained priest there in 1972, according to Catholic Hierarchy.
Patrick D’Rozario was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Dhaka in November 2010 by then Pope Benedict XVI. In October 2011, he succeeded Archbishop Paulinus Costa as Archbishop of Dhaka.
