The BNP has given special importance on the upcoming city corporations’ election to prove the neutrality of the election commission ahead of the national polls.
“We are surely giving stress on the up coming city corporation polls. We want the election commission to hold free, fair and acceptable city election,” BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury told The New Nation on Wednesday.
He said also the people have no confidence on the government as well as in the election commission for fair polls.
In such circumstances, the BNP is watching the activities of the government and the EC how and what measures they will execute to hold the election in free and fair manner.
Khulna and Gazipur city corporation elections will be held on May 15.
The EC affirmed to hold Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city elections before the national polls.
Sources said, the BNP high-command has taken the city polls as a crucial strategy. They think the voters are in their favour of the party.
The BNP leaders think that the imprisonment of the party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has increased its popularity.
In such situation, the party nominated mayor and councilor candidates will triumph, says the party senior leaders with confidence.
The BNP leaders also think they have nothing to lose in these polls, if the government plays a neutral role and if the voters can exercise their franchise.
The win in the city corporations polls will expose BNP’s popularity to the world.
It will make the way easier for BNP’s to win the next national elections.
On the other hand, if the government plays partisan role and involve in any vote rigging, the people will not accept that silently.
The party will also take the irregularities seriously before the media and to start strong agitation against the government. When contacted, BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal told The New Nation on Wednesday, “If the government plays foul in the up coming city corporation elections, the people of Bangladesh will not accept that. They must keep it mind that the next Parliament election is at the door step. The people will not give up them to play foul all the times.”
The people will take to the street to establish their voting right, Alal added.
The BNP leader said the voters will join them to compel the government to hold inclusive national polls.
The party leaders also take the city corporations polls as a acid test for the Election Commission.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain recently said that the Khulna and Gazipur city polls would be the acid tests for the EC to shows its capability and neutrality.
He told it in a discussion meeting in the National Press Club. The party leaders think if the EC can show its capability to hold acceptable election, then the BNP may consider to participate in the next national polls under this EC.
But if they failed to show its neutrality and capability, then the party will wage agitation against the EC too.
