The BNP has formed four probe committees to investigate the post-election attacks on Hindu community, extrajudicial killings and violation of human rights and police atrocities against opposition activists in recent time.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia formed the committees, which was released by the party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday.
Khaleda Zia decided to form the committees after a meeting with leaders of Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad, a pro-BNP professionals’ body, on Wednesday evening at her Gulshan office in the city, said assistant office secretary of the party Shamimur Rahman Shamim.
The probe bodies will compile cases of violence, identify persons responsible and make recommendations in their reports.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Jamir Uddin Sirkar will lead one of the committees. The seven-member committee was assigned for Sirajganj, Bogra and Gaibandha districts. Chairperson’s adviser AFM Abdul Halim will be the convener for the five-member committee for Nilphamari, Dinajpur and Thakurgaon districts.
Another adviser Shaukat Mahmud will lead the committee formed to probe incidents in Comilla, Chandpur, Lakhsmipur and Chittagong districts. Another committee was formed headed by convener of the Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad Ruhul Amin Gazi, which was assigned for Satkhira, Jessore, Kushtia and Meherpur districts.
Houses and shops of the Hindu community came under attack in several parts of the country after the Januray-5 election. The ruling Awami League held BNP and Jamaat responsible for the incidents while BNP and Jamaat allege that the attacks were organised by the ruling party to divert attention from the ‘one sided’ polls.
Khaleda Zia during the meeting with the professionals exchanged views about the prevailing political situation, including the January-5 elections and her party’s strategy to force the government to hold fresh polls. Describing her party’s movement a success, she said Sheikh Hasina became Prime Minister with the mandate of only 5 percent people.
In the two-hour long meeting, she sought the cooperation of the professionals in intensifying the movement. In response, the professionals assured her of working sincerely to increase people’s involvement in BNP-led alliance.
Khaleda Zia said that the current regime would not sustain even for a year, as it has no support at home or abroad. She also said the government is morally very weak though they are screaming loud to cling to power.
Referring to the movement, she said it would be gradually intensified to force the government to quit and arrange an inclusive and fair election.
